Entry Description

After five years of economic meltdown Greece’s critical 25th of January election resulted in left-wing Syriza victory, under Alexis Tsipras, ending decades of two party rule by conservative New Democracy and centre-left PASOK. Extreme-right Golden Dawn party came third, despite its leadership detained pending trial on charges of belonging to a criminal organisation. Bringing to power the first anti-austerity party in Europe, the Greek election result represents the first rumblings in 2015 of potential political and economic earthquakes on the European horizon.
